Description

San Onofre State Beach features three and a half miles of sandy beaches with six access trails cut into the bluff above. One of these is a nature trail that starts at San Mateo Canyon and leads to San Mateo State Preserve / Trestles Beach. The San Mateo campground is along Old Highway 101 and adjacent to the sandstone bluffs. The park’s coastal terrace is chaparral-covered, but includes a marshy area where San Mateo Creek meets the shoreline.

The beach is popular with swimmers and surfers . . . indeed, Trestles Beach, that well-known California surfing site, is here, as is San Onofre Surf Beach. Whales, dolphins and sea lions can be seen offshore from time to time.
