Shipwrecks, reef and colorful fish set the sub-surface scene off of Costa Maya, but venture on to dry land long enough to see nearby archaeological sites and crocodiles.
The northern end of the Secret Canyon Trail follows an historic stone shrine. Vegetation is mostly chaparral but there are some sections of oak land and riparian. The Secret Canyon Trail connects with Espinoza in the south. Bring lots of water.

I-8 East to Japatul Valley Road, Lyons Valley Road to Japatul Fire Station, Horsethief Trailhead. Parking area at the trailhead is suitable for equestrian and passenger vehicles. It is a short hike to the trail.
